MEET RAHUL
My mother, Sheila Didi, a trained barrister from the Lincoln's Inn (1956) in London, came to India leaving her family behind in Kenya to work amongst the people in India. She was one of the first three women lawyers at the High Court of our state in India. She worked tirelessly to defend Women's rights to rid society of dowry, cases of violence against women, discrimination in workplaces, defended trade union rights and she led the non-profit Women's organization of our state of Punjab in India. She was a part of the national leadership of the Women's organization and represented India at various International forums, including the first visit by the Indian government to the newly independent Bangladesh in the first meetings with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - the leader of Bangladesh.
She was being considered to be a Justice at the High Court of Punjab & Haryana in 1975 but took her name out of consideration as she felt it would reduce her ability to work in the grassroots and amongst the people. She was co-nominated, for her grassroots work amongst women, "the 1000 PeaceWomen Across the Globe for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005", an initiative organized by Dr. Ruth Vermont-Mangold, member of the Swiss Parliament and the Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy Rey.
She served tirelessly for the working masses and the Women of India throughout her life, both as an Attorney and public advocate.
She inspired me, along with my father, throughout their lives with their dedication to public service.
